A New Year and they’re right back to the controversial renters rights bill! Next Tuesday (14th) the bill enters its ‘Report Stage’ in Commons where all MPs debate and consider amendments that were proposed in the committee stage in November. Labour have so far prioritised this new legislation and it is expected that this stage may be very quick. We are members of the Letting Agents Trade Body Propertymark and they have just released useful kits for agents to write to their MPs with their concerns, which we’ll be doing today. There is still very little information on how the renters rights bill will affect Student tenancies going forward and we will be maintaining our stance that there must be amendments put in place for Students. We would urge anyone who also has concerns to also write to their MP.

Following the Report Stage, the Bill will then move to its third reading in the Commons. After approval, it will go to the House of Lords, where it will undergo similar scrutiny stages. Should the Lords propose further amendments, the Bill will return to the Commons for consideration, continuing this process until both Houses reach an agreement.
