Stage one of the Councils selective licencing scheme is now underway, meaning any property that has either 1 or 2 occupiers, a family or a property falls outside of the criteria for the Mandatory or Additional Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) schemes, that is in the Kemptown, Moulsecoomb & Bevendean, Queens Park or Whitehawk & Marina wards will need to have a licence. A person who fails to comply with a condition of a licence is liable upon summary conviction to an unlimited fine. Furthermore, it will not be possible to serve an eviction notice under Section 21 of Housing Act 1988 on tenants of an unlicensed licensable property.
Standard Fee: £690.00 with a £75.00 discount if the licence holder is accredited by the ihowz landlord association, national residential landlords’ association or safeagent.
The deadline for applications is 30th September 2024. If the council need to prompt you to apply for your selective licence after this date then the fee is raised to £783.00.
